Joseph Donald Carter, age 77, of Linn Valley, KS passed away at Shawnee Mission Medical Center on Friday, February 13, 2009, surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17th at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Road, Roeland Park, KS. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 16th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS with rosary recitation at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
Joe was born September 13, 1931 in Boulder, CO. He was a veteran of USAF. He was a member of the first class to start kindergarten at St. Agnes and graduated from St. Agnes High School. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was an avid bowler and an all around excellent athlete. He worked for Colgate Palmolive for 29 years and was a member of the Atomic Chemical and Oil Workers Local #5-114. He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. Joe touched many people’s lives with his humorous and generous nature. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Clarence Carter; sister, Kathleen Knopp and brothers, Michael and Daniel.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Martha; four sons, Joseph II and wife Keri, Edward and wife Sharon, John and wife Cindy and William and wife Jeanette; two daughters, Deborah Walker and Donna Schmalz and husband Steve; 18 grandchildren; one great grandchild; his sister, Mary Ann O’Connor; his brother, Raymond Carter and wife Rosemary; his aunt, Agnes Gallagher; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
