Jon Symon

January 19, 1936 — January 19, 2008

Jon Goodall Symon, 72 years old, of Mission, KS passed away on Saturday evening, January 19, 2008.
Born on April 11, 1935 to Robert Goodall Symon and Pauline Andrews Symon, at Sisters Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri, Jon would spend an idyllic childhood there that only the 1930?s and 1940?s could provide. He attended kindergarten at Eugene Field School and, in 1941, advanced to Noyes Elementary School, completing his primary education through the eighth grade. In 1953, he received a diploma from Central High School, then left St. Joseph to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, where he received his Bachelor?s Degree in Business. After serving his country in the United States Army and leaving as a Second Lieutenant, he earned a Master?s Degree in Business from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He began his career in the financial services field and ended as President of Kansas City-based Goodall Gas Company.
Jon had immense love and devotion for his wife, children, and grandchildren, and his many friends and family. A most handsome, caring, decent and generous person, Jon was also a gentleman in every sense of the word. Honour was everything and his word was his bond.

Jon gave religious devotion at Community Christian Church and enjoyed memberships at the YMCA and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, and was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts of America Day Camp program. Jon was a handball enthusiast ? a game taught to him by his father. For many years, he was the proud sponsor of The Bob Symon Memorial Handball Tournament, held in honour of his father. Handball players from all over the country and overseas travel to St. Joseph, MO each January to participate in this highly-regarded competition. His son, Scot, now follows in Jon?s handball footsteps and will continue this annual event in both Jon and Bob?s honour.

Surviving him is his beloved and devoted family: wife, Teresa Marguerite Melton-Symon, of Mission, KS; sister, Joan Symon Harrison, of Davis, CA; daughter, Laura Anne Symon Browne, and her husband, Tim Browne, and their son, Griffin, of Scottsdale, AZ; son, Scot Symon, and his son, Brady, of Kansas City, MO; son, Duncan Renfrow Symon, of Boston, MA; goddaughter, Mary Noel Stollenwerk-Andrews, of Raytown, MO; honorary mother, Dorothy Renfrow, of St. Louis, MO; honorary sister-in-law, Terri Renfrow-Flagg, of Washington, MO; cousin, Jassamine Redington, and her husband, James, of Fort Lauderdale, FL; cousin, Kristin Cravens, and her husband, Bret, and their children, Morgan and Connor, of Lenexa, KS; cousin, Kara Moore, of Overland Park, KS; niece, Lois Harrison, and her partner, Cari Michaels, and their children, Simon and Bennett, of St. Paul, MN; nephew, David Harrison, of Grinnell, IA; cousin, Robert Symon, and his wife, Langston, of Houston, TX; cousin, Mary Patterson, of Sebastopol, CA; former daughter-in-law, Christy Symon, and her daughter, Hannah Gaddis; and his beloved pets, Abigail (Tinker Toy), Jamie, Little Cat, and Pedro. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Goodall Symon and Pauline Andrews Symon; cousin, Mary Lisa Moore, and her husband, Robert; and those from the Andrews and Symon families, as well as in-law relatives from the Melton family.
