John Thomas Taylor was born July 31, 1926 in Kansas City, MO, the youngest of six children born to John Tilden Taylor and Minnie Gode Taylor, who both preceded him in death. He married Velma J. Nolte on March 11, 1950 in Jefferson City, MO, she also preceded him in death.
John was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1953.
John and Velma began their donut career in 1960, opening a Dixie Cream shop in Kansas City, MO. In October 1967, they opened John?s Space Age Donuts, located in Overland Park, KS. John retired from the business in 1994.
John is survived by his son John David Taylor and daughter-in-law Brenda Taylor; son Rodney Taylor; grandson Matthew Taylor, all of Overland Park; and grandson Joshua Taylor, of Leawood. He is survived by one sister, Lois Boice of Kansas City, KS; many nieces and nephews.
John is also survived by his many friends and acquaintances ? the man never met a stranger ? these include many customers of John?s Space Age Donuts, friends in Las Vegas, NV where he made his home for ten years, and his special new friends at Overland Park Place, where he lived for the past 10 months.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thurs. Jan. 18, at D.W. Newcomer?s Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf; burial to follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday Jan. 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice House or to the American Heart Association.
