John M. Robbins, 85, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on February 29, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 7 at 11 a.m., preceded by a Rosary service at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, KS. He will be buried beside his wife, Helen, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City, MO, where full military honors will be presented. Visitation will be from 5-6 pm on Sunday, March 6 at Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to St. Labre Indian School, PO Box 216, Ashland, MT, 59003-9989.
John was born at home on March 6, 1931 in Marshall, MO to parents Fred A. and Grace C. Robbins. He played football during his High School years and upon graduation he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. John worked for General Motors and retired after many years of employment there. He had great fondness for his canine companions over the years, especially Lamar, Amos, Andy, and Rocky. Always attentive to the needs of his fellow veterans, John faithfully served in the Color Guard with his comrades through Dwight Cowles American Legion Post # 370 at their funeral services. John served Post # 370 as an officer and assisted with flag burning ceremonies. He went to the VA Medical Center in Leavenworth to call Bingo games, take snacks and personal items which brought joy and comfort to veterans there. He had a true servant’s heart.
