Dr. John Douglas Green, age 85, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home late Pentecost Sunday, May 23. He departed with the Spirit to make his home with God, joined to the eternal Body of Christ.
Faithful husband of Molly T. Marshall, President of Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Douglas was born on May 19, 1925, to Donald and Ora Green in Merkel, Texas. He is survived by two sisters, Dialtha White of Houston and Doris Freeman of Abilene. Two brothers, Edward and Morgan, live in Argyle and Abilene, TX, respectively. He was proud of his three children: John Douglas Green, Jr., of Farmington, MO; Gary A. Green and his wife Anita of Sand Springs, OK, and their daughters Katie and her husband Scott Parmely, and Kelsey Green; Janis Green Thomas and her husband Paul of Bartlesville, OK, and their sons Joshua and his wife Jennifer Thomas, and Andrew Thomas.
Dr. Green served in the Coast Guard during World War II for three years, 1943-1946, earning four Bronze Stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. Following his service, he attended Baylor Medical College and graduate in 1952. For the next 46 years he practiced medicine in Cushing, OK, and Louisville, KY. A contented resident of Shawnee, KS, he enjoyed retirement sitting on his deck, grilling for his wife and friends, and sharing life with a theologically attentive schnauzer, Wilfred. Douglas was a member of Prairie Baptist Church.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation at 1:00 p.m. and funeral service at 2:30 on Friday May 29, at Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Avenue, Prairie Village, KS 66208. A reception will follow. In this season of Pentecost in the Christian year, the people of God will celebrate resurrection hope in the power of the Spirit.
