John F. Alvarez, Jr. passed away on September 29, 2007 at Kansas City Hospice House. John was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on November 29, 1916, and was one of six children of John and Mildred Gray Alvarez.
Memorial services and celebration of life will be held at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS on Saturday, October 6th at 12:00 noon. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 12:00pm with a Rosary prayed at 11:30. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, 83rd and Quivira, Lenexa, KS immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, and the family is grateful for the wonderful care John received there. John was a longtime member,usher, and participant in perpetual adoration at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, KS.
John retired after 35 years at Bendix Corporation in the Quality Assurance Department. He was an IAM Union Member. He also retired after part-time employment of 25 years at Sears at Metcalf South. In addition,John was the first employee for Vic Macek of Macek's Auto. At one time,John took a course in public speaking to become a Toastmaster. John had a keen passion for aviation and was a licensed pilot. In fact,John and Bill Lynch flew a biplane they actually built to Alaska and back in 1988, generating excitement and friendships along the way. They appeared in 1990 on the Art Linkletter Show, "Adults Do the DarndestThings", to speak of their adventures and accomplishments.
John was a charter member of the Lionel Toy Train Club and had hundreds of sets of Lionel trains and layouts. He was proud to be a leader for Boy Scouts of America, and volunteered in any organization needing his help. He was often seen at the Overland Park Historical Society events with his wife, Twila. John especially enjoyed music and was an accomplished dancer. After retirement, he even took guitar lessons. Anyone who met John was an immediate friend and fan. John was very creative and enjoyed sharing his passion and talents with others.
John is survived by his wife of 26 years, Twila Erikson Lindahl Alvarez,of the home. He is also survived by his son, John F. Alvarez, III and wife Sharon of San Ramon, California; his daughter, Mary Hadjimichael and husband Odisseas of Athens, Greece; and three grandchildren,
Teddie Hadjimichael, Jenifer Lindahl Boles, and Nels Lindahl. John is also survived by his loving and devoted sister Margarita Stetson who visited John regularly at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Home. He is also survived by his sister, Connie Willoughby and brother, Ralph(Smokey)Alvarez, Sr. and numerous family members. John was a devoted and loving family man, and embraced his extended family.
