JOANNE MARTIN
Joanne Lucy Metcalfe Martin passed away peacefully on April 19, 2011. She was born on April 21, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri to John F. and Charlotte Caldwell Metcalfe. She was married to William B. Martin on May 12, 1951. He preceded her in death. Joanne attended Sunset Hill School and graduated from Southwest High School. Some of her fondest memories were of playing field hockey at Sunset.
Joanne was a loving mother who provided her family with unconditional love and endless baked treats. Joanne was most proud of her many years volunteering for the Red Cross and translating books into Braille for the Library of Congress. A voracious reader and avid wordsmith, Joanne volunteered at school libraries and participated in book clubs. Joanne was a prolific writer whose thoughtful correspondence touched many, many lives. Joanne loved to garden and had a natural green thumb. She delighted in God’s simplest gifts, always finding beauty in everything.
The final years of her life were spent sharing her incredible gentle and resolute spirit with residents and staff at The Sweet Life. Joanne’s sweet smile and inexhaustible charity will be remembered by all whose lives she touched.
Joanne is survived by her sister Charlotte Land (Everett) of Brenham, Texas and her brother Wilton Persons (Christine) of Skidaway Island, Georgia. She will be greatly missed by her children: Nancy M. McDonell (Scott) of Litchfield Park, Arizona, John W. Martin (Patricia) of Willington, Connecticut, William O. Martin of Kansas City, Missouri and Susan M. Hinkle (James) of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
