JERE KIMMEL
Our family lost its leader Monday May 23, 2011 when Jere left this earth. He loved life, his family, his work, and his playtime. Jere was born July 26, 1929 in Falls City, NE to Leta and Dean Kimmel. He grew up in Hiawatha, KS, and has always remained close to his hometown roots. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Heritage United Methodist Church, 12850 Quivira Rd. Overland Park, KS, with a visitation prior from 1-2 p.m. There will be a private committal service at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
Jere was a proud University of Kansas graduate, a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and an avid supporter and participant in the KU Alumni Marching Band. He loved KU football and basketball games that he could share with his grandsons. His married life brought him to Kansas City where he started working at Hallmark Cards, Inc. in production, then on to Bremson Photo Industries. This lead to him starting his own professional photofinishing business, Studio Sales and Service. Continuing his entrepreneurial path in 1980 , he and his partner, Larry Goldstein, opened One Hour Photo, a business which brought, for the first time in the country, one hour photofinishing service to indoor shopping malls. Branching this business into many U.S. markets allowed him to sponsor his other love, golf tournaments, as well as a fun Disney on Ice Event. Jere was also privileged to work with Thomas Hart Benton photographing the artist’s paintings, and enjoyed sharing an occasional drink with the artist in his studio. After the sale of One Hour Photo, along with starting several other businesses, he worked with golf course OSHA compliance, which allowed him to travel and play golf, as well as work.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years Kathleen (Katie), his son Jere and wife Crystal, grandsons Jacob, Caleb and Noah; his son Bryan; his daughter; his sister Jacque Wheat; a niece Sharon; nephew Douglas and families. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the KU Endowment Ref. Kimmel Band Scholarship, as this was started by Jere some years ago. P.O. Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044-9028.
The family would like to thank the staff of Garden Terrace for their compassionate care of Jere.
Jere: May you rest in peace with all of our love.
