Jerald Keith Bales, 82, of Shawnee Mission, KS, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008. Private memorial services will be held on Wednesday, December 17 at Village Church, Prairie Village, KS. Inurnment in the Village Church Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 W. 75th, Shawnee Mission, KS 66208; Kansas City Symphony, 1020 Central, Suite 300, Kansas City, MO 64105-1672. Jerry was born July 13, 1926 in Newton, IA to Merle and Margaret Bales. He grew up in Lebanon, KS. To anyone who would listen, he frequently referred to it as the “continental center of the United States.” He graduated from Mankato, KS High School and attended the University of Kansas where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Jerry played basketball in High School and enjoyed sharing that he was “high point man on the state basketball championship team.” He was an accomplished pianist, earning a degree in Music from the University of Kansas before entering Law School and graduating with a Juris Doctorate. He enlisted in the military during college, serving briefly in the Korean War. His business career was spent in Kansas City where he served as a member of Langworthy, Matz & Linde law offices, Trust Officer at Union National Bank, Judge for the City of Mission, KS., and Senior Vice President General Counsel at Business Men’s Assurance where he spent 25 years before retiring. His hobbies included listening to music, playing piano, and golf. He was a member of Village Church for over 50 years where he served as a teacher in Village Youth Confirmation classes with his wife, Irma. Jerry was a devoted family man, spending time with his children playing golf, attending swim meets, and coaching basketball. He loved Irma and is remembered by his children as a man of high principle and integrity.
Survivors include his children, Rick Walker Bales-Benedictine Priest, Clear Creek Monastery, Hulbert, OK; Dr. Anne Eleanor Bray; Scott McVicker Bales and his wife, Donna; four grandsons, Ford and Chase Bray and Aaron and Wesley Bales. The children want to express their appreciation to the staff of Brighton Gardens, Prairie Village, KS, for their care of Jerry over the past six years, and family, personal, and work friends for their care and concern during his illness. You are a blessing in our lives.
