Jeanette Teresa (Downey) Andersen passed away September 24, 2010, at Brighton Gardens in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Memorial visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice. She was born in Mason City, Iowa, on March 20, 1914, and grew up in Fairmont, Minnesota. She attended nurses training at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, and received her Nursing Diploma in 1936. In July of that same year she married her high school sweetheart, Vic Andersen, and two years later followed him to Kansas City where he was working in the brand new field of radio and television engineering. She continued her nursing career until her daughter, Mary Kathleen, arrived in 1948, after which she filled her time as a mother and wife. In the early 60’s she began working in the field of preschool education. After Vic died in 1966 she pursued training in the Montessori method of teaching and was one of the first Montessori certified preschool teachers in Kansas City. She worked at several preschools including St. Michael’s, St. Paul’s and Highlawn. She was active in the establishment of the Johnson County Living History program and she also worked for a time in the office of Drs. Leo, O’Farrell and McGannon. She retired in 1986 to help care for her grandson when he arrived.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Irma Downey; her brothers, Joseph, Richard and Robert, and sister, Audrey; and her husband, Victor. She leaves her daughter, Mary K. Holdgraf and husband, Michael; her grandson, Christopher, special “grand-nephew” Cullen Rice, and many cousins, nephews and nieces and their families. You did not “go gentle into that good night…” We all miss you, Mimi and Mom.
