Jean Mees McKnight, age 95, Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away peacefully at Brighton Gardens on July 15, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Pomeroy, Ohio, on March 10, 1917, the second daughter of Jacob and Margaret Mees. She was encouraged by her musician father in early years to pursue violin studies. Aided by the eye of her watchful mother, she became a violin prodigy and attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music at a very early age. There, she was urged to continue her studies with a famed violin professor at Louisiana State University. At L.S.U., she met an engaging business/music major who won her heart. She was married to Sidney A. McKnight, Sr. for nearly sixty years. In her younger years, she always played with the local symphony and string quartets, while juggling the role of corporate wife and mother. Her starring role began when she became a grandmother, pouring out kindness, wisdom, and generosity. She particularly enjoyed her summers in Michigan at Epworth Heights, having her grandchildren under her roof for several weeks at a time. Those who knew her best found her to be the consummate lady and gentle, kind spirit.
She will always be dearly loved and missed by her only child, Dr. Sidney A. McKnight, Jr., his wife Carole (who considered Jean to be the perfect mother-in-law!), grandson Dr. Sidney A. McKnight, III (Dr. Abbie McKnight), granddaughter Allison Kramer (Michael Kramer), great grandchildren, Sam and Duncan McKnight, Evan Elizabeth Kramer, Noah Kramer, Eli Kramer and Mia Kramer.
There will be a private memorial service for immediate family members. The family requests no flowers. If you wish, memorials may be sent to U.M.K.C Conservatory of Music, 4949 Cherry Street, KC, MO 64110-2229.
