Janet was born September 4, 1937 in Kansas City, MO the daughter of Walter D. and Frances Maxine Smith. She lived all her life in Kansas City, Leawood and Overland Park. She graduated from Paseo High School in 1955 and was president of her sorority. She worked as a bookkeeper at Traders National Bank and the Midwest Division of Mobil Oil Company. She resigned as an Executive Secretary/Administrative Assistant soon after her marriage in 1970. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and more recently attended mass at Christ the King Catholic Church. Janet grew up with Boston Terrier dogs in the family home and in 1980 expanded her interest in the breed to include training and showing Bostons. She bred and raised numerous American Kennel Club "Champions" through the years under the kennel name of Classic-Elegance Bostons and showed many prize winning Bostons throughout the nation. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching others to participate in the hobby of grooming and showing dogs and put her skills of handling in the show ring to good use. She became actively involved in numerous dog clubs including the Heart of America Kennel Club, Boston Terrier Club of America, Heartland Boston Terrier Club, Boston Terrier Club of Oklahoma City, Boston Terrier Club of Des Moines, and Boston Terrier Club of New York City. She served the Heart of America Kennel Club as Secretary and Board Member for the past 13 years, the Boston Terrier Club of America as National Treasurer and Board Member and the Heartland Boston Terrier Club as President. She helped start the Boston Terrier Quarterly, national breed magazine, and served the publication as an Advisory Editor from its inception in 1987 to the present. She was also an accomplished interior decorator having taken numerous classes and had an exceptional talent for knowing just how to design and arrange a room. She took great pleasure in decorating inside her home as well as outside for various holidays, especially Easter and Christmas and delighted in finding new pieces each year to vary her displays. Janet was a self-taught cook and baker and found great pleasure in dining out then attempting to duplicate the taste of a particular dish in her own kitchen.

Janet was preceded in death by her father Walter D. "Dub" Smith, in 1963, and by her mother Frances Maxine (Bowen) Smith in 1999. She is survived by her husband Richard Rees of the home, brother-in-law Bob Rees and wife Judy of Bartlesville, OK, nephew Richard and his wife and daughter Carleigh and Alex of Midlothian, TX, niece Elizabeth Waugh of Coral Springs, FL, cousin Bill Hunter, of Kansas City, MO, and his daughter Angela McGill and husband Dan of Raymore, MO. A kind and compassionate heart has been stilled but your talents will live on through the many kindnesses you extended to others. You were my inspiration, beloved wife and heartfelt companion. Independent of mind but with sound judgment, your love of an active life was your hallmark. Help God keep Heaven organized until I join you. All my love, Richard.
