JAMES LEROY “WOODY” WOOD
James Leroy “Woody” Wood born March 5, 1920 to Bennie and Gertrude Gibbons Wood in Slater, MO. He graduated from high school being an outstanding quarterback with the football team. At 17 years old he talked the entire team into joining the Navy with him! They joined for 18 months. Upon returning he married his high school sweetheart Joan Hawkins. He worked on the Sante Fe railroad for 38 years as a carman. Leroy was a deacon at Trinity Baptist and Rockhill Baptist Churches in KC, MO.
He leaves his wife of the home, son Rodney of Warsaw, MO and his daughter Wendy from Ft. Thomas, KY, sister Mary H. Hill of Springdale AK, and favorite cousin Eva S. Thomas of KC, MO.
He died September 13th at Overland Park Nursing and Rehab where he was taken care of by loving people for 4 ½ years. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to O.P. Nursing and Rehab Employees fund or Parkinson Foundation. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday September 16th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel with a visitation prior from 10-11 a.m. Entombment at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
