James W. "Doc" Thompson, Sr., 85, of Raymore, Mo., passed away Friday, February 18, 2011. Visitation will be from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan., with a service to follow at 2:30 p.m. Burial in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice House. Doc co-owned Thompson Lawn & Garden for 20 years and Thompson Turf Farm for 50 years. He loved his grandchildren, and enjoyed baseball and fishing. Doc was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary E. Thompson; his sisters, Rosemary (Micki) Elwood, and Leona Lucas; half brothers, Melvin, Frank, and Alfred Thompson; half sister, Marie Ewing; step siblings, Hazel and Irene Reedy; Josephine Elmore; and Henry Bergen. Survivors include his daughter, Evaleena Rose "Sue" Sanders; son, James W. Thompson, Jr. (Nancy); grandchildren, Deana L. Starkey, Donna Sue Fiatte (Bill), Charles E. Newcome (Ruth), Terri Thompson, and Tracy Lyle (Morgan); nine great grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
