James Edward Barnes, 91, of Shawnee, Kans., passed away as the result of advanced chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD) on Oct. 3, 2015, at the home. He was in hospice care. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, of the home; son James E. Barnes, Shawnee, Kans.; and daughters Cheryl Barnes, Kansas City, Mo.; and Janice Blackwood-Gill (Michael Gill) of Louisville, Ky.
He was born July 25, 1924, in Edgerton, Kans., to Louis Earl and Pearl Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Louis E. Barnes.
He retired from the Sears regional warehouse center. After retirement he worked as a school crossing guard for Niemen Grade School in Shawnee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and RV camping. He and his wife were long-time members of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kans.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Harvesters Community Food Network (3801 Topping, Kansas City, Mo., 64129) or a local food bank, Great Plans SPCA (5428 Antioch Dr., Merriam, Kans., 66202) or a local pet rescue facility or charity of your choice.
