HUBERT H. BELL M.D.
Hubert H. Bell, M.D., 77, of Hilton Head Island, SC, joined the Lord in Heaven on March 31, 2011, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's. He died peacefully at home in Hilton Head.
Hugh was born in Atchison, Kansas on December 13, 1933, and was a graduate of Atchison High School and the University of Kansas. Hugh was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was a member of the University of Kansas Debate Team, and in 1954 won first place at the National Collegiate Debate Championship at West Point, NY. The following year he was awarded Best Speaker out of 82 contestants. Hugh served two years in the Air Force before entering the University of Kansas Medical School. After earning his medical degree, and finishing his internship and residency, Hugh completed his fellowship in Cardiology. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, and was proud of his elected membership into the honorary medical fraternity Alpha Omega Alpha.
Hugh practiced medicine for 35 years and also enjoyed teaching. He founded Mid-America Cardiology Associates with one partner, and retired 25 years later with 23 partners. Hugh served as Chairman of the St. Luke's Hospital Cardiovascular Department and as Cardiology Section Chief of the Internal Medicine Residency Program for St. Luke's Hospital and the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a Clinical Professor at UMKC. He was a National Finalist for the American Heart Association Teacher Award and a recipient of the St, Luke's Teacher of the year Award. In 1988, Hugh was voted Best Cardiologist in the greater Kansas City area. Hugh was a pioneer in the study of lipids and cholesterol, and he created an innovative Lipid Clinic which he directed for twelve years. During his career, he published numerous scientific and clinical articles. Hugh enjoyed taking care of patients and never once complained about going to the hospital at any time-day or night.
Hugh held a fascination for horticulture from the time he was a little boy until his last year of life. After a day of caring for patients, he headed straight to the garden, still in suit and tie, to check on his flowers. Hugh combined his interest in public speaking with his passion for learning by starting the cultural lecture series, Cabbages and Kings. He was also an avid writer of songs, poems and fiction.
Hugh and Sharon, his devoted wife of 31 years, were inseparable. They enjoyed many years of playing together writing and singing songs, playing trombone/piano duets, playing tennis, skiing, walking and biking on the beach, traveling, and sharing fun times with good friends. Hugh was an outstanding father to his five children. He could always interject humor into any situation, and he was a perfect model of patience, generosity and wisdom. He was the most kind-hearted, warm father any child could ever hope to have. He was certainly nice to provide his family with multiple English Bulldogs!
Hugh and Sharon were members of Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment, and they started a group in Hilton Head that continued for ten years. Hugh taught the Christians under Construction Sunday School class at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City. After moving to Hilton Head, Hugh was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and taught adult Sunday school. He was a leader in Stephen Ministry. He belonged to and was president of Men of the Church.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Bell, Sr., and Mildred Mangelsdorf Bell. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sharon; one sister, Barbara Hunter; two daughters, Dr. Lynn Bell Norton (Blair Widener), Marissa Priester (William); and three sons James Bell (Deborah), Robert Bell (Corinne), and Dr. Quint Newcomer (Lori). Grampa cherished his ten grandchildren, Luke, Jared, Jessa, Isaac and Tara Norton, Zachary Widener, Chandler Bell, Jane and Susanna Priester, and Ellery Newcomer.
Dr. Bell/Hugh/Dad/Grampa/Boss was a heart expert in many ways. He devoted his professional life to fighting heart disease, but his other calling was touching the hearts of all of us so near and dear to him. He was a gentle man with a giant heart, deep compassion, and great insight. The love and joy he imprinted on each of our hearts will influence us for the rest of our lives. As one of his favorite songs says, "That's how it is with God's love-once you experience it, you spread His love to everyone, you want to pass it on."
The family wishes to thank Hugh's devoted caregivers, Louise, Linda, Lorraine and Deborah, as well as the excellent Tidewater Hospice Team.
A celebration of Hugh's life will be held in Kansas City at Country Club Christian Church Chapel on Thursday, April 7th at 2pm with a reception immediately following in the Church Parlor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Tidewater Hospice, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Suite A, Bluffton, SC 29910
