Howard H. Smothers, Sr., 96, of Lenexa, KS, passed away on November 27, 2012.
Howard was born on April 24, 1916 in Buford, Arkansas to John and Hester Smothers, the sixth of seven children. Howard wed Louise Piercy in Kansas City, MO, on August 13, 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. in 1942 and served until January 1946. He later went on to work for Jensen Salsbery Laboratories, KCK, where he worked for over 30 years.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Louise, four children, Howard H. (Barbara) Smothers, Jr., of East Palatka, FL, Ronald (Kathy) Smothers of Wichita, KS, Linda (Charles) Hopkins of Olathe, KS, and Kenneth (Theresa) Smothers of St. Joseph, MO, five grandchildren, Laurie Ahlman of Wichita, KS, Jenny Simmons of Wichita, KS, Christopher Hopkins of Carlsbad, CA, Jeremy Hopkins of Kingman, KS, and Justin Smothers of Austin, TX, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, and five sisters and one brother.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 8th, 10:30-11:00 AM, with a Celebration of Howard's life to follow at 11:00 AM, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Lenexa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice, or to a charity of choice.
