Helen C. Benjes, 87, of Hilton Head Island, SC, and formerly of the Kansas City area, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2014.
Helen was born on February 12, 1926 in Piedmont, SC to Bryan and Mildred O'Neal (White) Crosby. She was predeceased by her second husband Henry H. Benjes, her step-daughter Evelyn F. Benjes and grandson Paul J. Benjes. Her first marriage was to Lewis A. Dysart.
Helen is survived by her children, Laura Dysart Marcy (husband John Marcy) of Ridgewood, NJ, Kathryn E. Dysart (husband Jeffrey Schwartz) of Katonah, NY, Robert L. Dysart (companion DeLynn Sands) of Scottsdale, AZ , step-sons Henry H. Benjes, Jr. (wife Diane Benjes) of Golden, CO. and Richard A. Benjes (wife Beverly Benjes) of Hutchinson, KS. She leaves behind 5 grandchildren (Elizabeth Hermansky, Spencer Marcy, Gregory Marcy, Emily Dysart, Aidan Dysart) and one great grandchild (Jack Hermansky), as well as her sister, Betty Burnette (husband Harold) of Kansas City, and many beloved step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She received her undergraduate degree from MacMurray College and her graduate degrees are from the University of Michigan and UMKC. Professionally, Mandy, her nickname, was an educator, and counselor. She was a theater and art world enthusiast. Her passion was her family and friends. She loved to entertain and travel.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25th, 3:30 PM, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS.
