Hazel R. Hoadley, 79, of Leawood, was peacefully called to the Lord on October 31, 2010. Memorial services Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at D.W. Newcomer’s Memorial Chapel, 8210 Metcalf, Overland Park. Internment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial contributions may be made to Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village.
Hazel was born March 11, 1931, in Paraguay, one of four children to Christian missionaries, whose travels took them to South America and many parts of the United States. Hazel attended high school in Spirit Lake, Idaho, college at Sterling College in Kansas, and became a Registered Nurse in Kansas City, Mo. It was there she met her husband, William D. Hoadley, who was a student at the University of Kansas Medical School, when they both worked at downtown’s General Hospital. They were married in 1956, moved to Portland, Ore., where he undertook his internship, then moved to Alameda, Calif., for his two-year service in the U.S. Navy, before settling in suburban Kansas City in the mid-1960s, where they raised three children while Bill built his medical practice. Hazel embraced a life of service and volunteering throughout the community, including work for the Research Hospital Auxiliary, the Kansas City Garden Club, the Shawnee Mission School District, Village Church and Hillcrest Covenant Church. She enjoyed her lifelong role as homemaker and mother, staying involved in the lives of her children and, eventually, her role as grandmother, or “Nana,” as she delighted in babysitting, playing and reading to her nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Hoadley. She is survived by her son Jeff and daughter in law Charlene of Jacksonville, Fla.; son Roger and daughter in law Kyla of Leawood, Kan.; daughter Carol Hoadley Davis and son in law Dan of Portland, Ore.; and grandchildren Amber, Becca, Caroline, William, Ryan, Maggie, Max, Zachary and Graham. Her imprint on each of their lives is indelible, her spirit lives on in them, and she will be missed.
