Harry John Helmsing, Jr.
Born in Kennard, Nebraska on November 20, 1921 to Geneva and Harry Helmsing, Sr., Harry John Helmsing, Jr. died Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Garden Terrace of Overland Park. He graduated from Kennard High School in the midst of the Great Depression and found work in the government's CCC program. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1940, Harry served in the Pacific Theatre until 1946. He was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor Attack of 1941 and belonged to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. His name is inscribed on the Pearl Harbor memorial in Mission, Kansas.
After the war, Harry moved to Omaha and found employment at Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1986. In Omaha, he met his future wife, Geneva V. Young, and they were married in the evening on September 17, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska under a beautiful full moon. Due to Harry's employment, Harry and Gee moved from Omaha to Urbandale, Iowa and finally to Roeland Park, Kansas. Harry and Geneva filled their retirement years with gardening, grandchildren, and volunteering at Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries in Kansas City, Missouri.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack Helmsing and Leo Helmsing; son, Steven Helmsing; grandson, Alan Nab; and step-granddaughter, Dena Sorenson. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Helmsing of Overland Park Place, Overland Park, Kansas; daughters, Janet Laurent (Nick) of Emporia, Kansas and Joan Davidson (Tom) of Prairie Village, Kansas; a brother, Howard Cook of Kennard, Nebraska; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 2 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf. A funeral service will immediately follow at 10 a.m. at the chapel. Burial at Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens.

Harry was respected by all who knew him for his integrity, generosity of spirit, and wry sense of humor.
