Harry Clyde Gibbons, Jr., 92, Prairie Village, KS, passed away peacefully at his home on December 4, 2015. Harry was born in Otis, Colorado on August 21, 1923. Upon graduation from Denison High School, Denison, Iowa, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman and served in the south Pacific throughout World War II. He was in the first group of enlisted men commissioned as an Ensign in the Medical Service Corps, USN. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of active duty.
Harry was a graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. He was a talented executive, skilled mentor, big band drummer, enthusiastic wood carver, avid reader, and an accomplished culinary expert. All will miss his fresh loaves of bread!
He met his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Theresa Welch, at Camp Lejeune, NC. Together, they raised seven children who then presented them with 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Harry was preceded in death by wife Mary, daughter Betsy, and granddaughters Erica and Amy. Rejoicing in their memories are his children Greg, Mary Lee, Theresa, Susan, Kathy, Jenny, their families and his brother Jean.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 6-8 pm at Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS, 66204. Burial, with full military honors, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 11, 2015 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
