Harriet Sikes

Harriet Celia (Jackson) Sikes, 85, of Overland Park, KS, died peacefully surrounded by her children on Wednesday, February 4, 2015.

Harriet was born on February 2, 1930 in Melrose, FL to Ruth and Harry Jackson.  She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Jacksonville, FL. with her RN degree in 1951. The same year on June 24th, she married A.W. Sikes.   She started her nursing career at St. Luke’s in Jacksonville, FL and continued at both Alachua General and Orange Memorial, both in Florida.   Upon moving to Kansas City in 1962, she became a stay-at-home mom until 1968 when she returned to nursing at Shawnee Mission Medical Center where she worked as a surgical nurse for over twenty-five years.  After her retirement, she and her husband traveled frequently to Europe. She loved to read and was an avid Kansas Jayhawks fan.  She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Retired Nurses Association of Shawnee Mission Medical Center.  For the last three years she resided at The Forum.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband A.W.  She is survived by her son Armond W. Sikes, Jr., and his wife Pam of Cape Coral, Florida; daughter, Janine Deines and husband, Lance of Olathe, KS; grandchildren Nancy (Jason) Ringel, Wes (Christina) Sikes, Susan Hale, Mallory (Sam) Arends, and Spencer Deines; nine great-grandchildren; her brother Harry (Jerry) Jackson of Melrose, FL.; and nephews Harry F. Jackson of Melrose, FL and Mitchell Jackson of Lake Mary, FL.

Visitation will be from 3 – 5 p.m. Sunday, February 8 at the Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf.  Private interment at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.  Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 9, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th St. Prairie Village.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Asbury Daycare Ministries Scholarship Fund, 5400 W. 75th St. Prairie Village, KS  66208.
