Harold L. Heathman, Mission, KS, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, of heart failure, after surgery on February 25th. A celebration of Hal?s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 15th at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Cremation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Wayside Waifs, P.O. Box 9791, Kansas City, MO 64134-0791.
Hal was born on April 4, 1926, in LaHarpe, KS, to Myrtle and Lloyd Heathman, who preceded him in death. He had one sister, Leona Menegay and two brothers, Glenn and Arthur Heathman, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by a niece, Donna Phillips, of Columbus, Montana; great-nieces, Stephanie Finley and Shelley Yeager; great nephews, Steven and Michael Purdon; a cousin, Beverly Aylward, of Topeka, KS; his partner, Kenneth Doll of the home; and his beloved dog, Jasmine and cat, Florence.
Hal served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945, as a photographer. Upon discharge, he was a photographer for the old Emery Bird Thayer store in downtown Kansas City, MO, then he enrolled in cosmetology school, and opened his Salon, Hal?s, west of the Plaza, and later on at Gregory and Grand. He also practiced interior design and operated a gift and accessories store, Heathmans, in Crestwood. Hal enjoyed cooking and entertaining. He had a zest for living and will be sorely missed by a large host of friends.
