Gloria J. Sante, 86, died Feb. 9, 2011 at the University of Kansas Medical Center with her family at her side.
She was born Gloria Jean Fox on Nov. 15, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo. She attended Central High School, then the University of Missouri where she graduated with honors in 1946.
She met her beloved husband, the late Capt. Robert Sante, U.S. Navy Retired, when they were high school classmates, and they were married in Kansas City in 1949. As Robert served in the U.S. Navy, they lived many places but returned to Kansas City upon his retirement in 1975.
In retirement, they traveled extensively, in the United States and Europe. They also made annual pilgrimages to the Blue Spruce Inn in Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada where Gloria’s daily routine involved binoculars and a search for loons on Oxtongue Lake.
She was a longtime member of Leawood United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and an active member of the church’s mission team. She was the founder of the church’s knitting group that knitted stocking caps, sweaters and scarves for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau and Cross-Lines. Gloria was known for her baby sweaters, keeping hundreds of infants warm.
Gloria spent the final months of her life at Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village following her husband’s death. The family thanks the staff for their compassionate care.
She is survived by daughter Gina Pulliam and her husband Kent, daughter Marin Goodier and her husband Kerry, grandson Daniel; and sister Cordelia Dick and her husband John. Her parents, John and Terressa Fox, and her brother William Fox predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at Leawood United Methodist Church. 2914 West 95th Street. There will be a family visitation at the church at 9:30 a.m. She will be buried beside her husband at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest a donation to Cross-Lines Community Outreach (736 Shawnee, Kansas City, Kansas, 66105), a social service agency close to Gloria’s heart.
