Geraldine “Gerre” Ann Mathews, 75, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away August 11, 2014 . Gerre Ann was born July 5, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended Bishop Hogan High School. Soon after graduating in 1956, she joined the law firm of DeWitt, Nigro & Wilson. The opportunity fostered the development of natural skills that aligned with a consummate Executive Assistant.
Shortly after the Chiefs moved to Kansas City, Gerre Ann was offered and accepted the position of Administrative Assistant to the General Manager. The formative years of the franchise operated with a small staff. As a result, her position encompassed numerous support functions, including the organization of booster trips, half-time productions and special appearances.
In 1974, Gerre Ann married Glenn Earl Mathews. A few years later, an opportunity was afforded Glenn that required a move to Chicago. Just two short years later, they returned home to Kansas City. At that time, they formed a private company – Glencoe Investments; which focused on site acquisitions. Gerre Ann assisted with formation and other start-up activities.
Glencoe immediately experienced exceptional, profitable growth. With operations and structure well-established, Gerre Ann returned to the Chiefs. She soon assumed a role as manager of special projects: a position well-suited to her meticulous, generous nature.
In 1996, Gerre Ann and Glenn made a commitment to retire. This decision demonstrated a tremendous mutual devotion, and their unique ability to find joy together every day. They spent many wonderful years gardening, travelling, and generally enjoying one another’s company. They also served in a variety of lay ministries at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.
Gerre was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; mother, Agnes; and father, Gerald. She is survived by many friends and family, including sister and brother-in-law Margaret and David Smith; nieces Michaela Hesser and Jessica Lance and their families. Gerre will be remembered for her determination, practicality, kindness and humor.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Sweet Life at Brookdale Place for their sensitive manner in caring for Gerre Ann.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall, Mission Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Michael’s Foundation or Brookdale Hospice.
