Gerald I. Childers, 86, passed away Friday, October 15, 2010. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel; burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel with a Masonic service starting at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Shriner's hospitals or burn centers. Gerald was born March 10, 1924 in Kansas City, KS and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1942. Gerald was a draftsman for Black and Veatch Consulting Engineers for 42 years retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Valley View United Methodist Church, a member and Past Master of the Overland Park Masonic Lodge # 436, a member of the Abdallah Shrine and the Antique Car Unit where he proudly drove his 1957 Chevy in parades. Gerald was married to Virginia L. Carter in 1945 for 41 years, she preceded him in death in 1986. Survivors include his children: Carter (Joan) Childers; Cindy (Mark) Craig; Mindy (Leo) Gerard; and Becky (Mike) Olson; a sister, Lu Brune; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Gerald will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa, and was devoted to his wife and children.
