Geneva Viola Young Helmsing died September 11, 2014 as her loving daughters held her hands. She is survived by: daughters Janet Nab (Nick) Laurent and Joan (Tom) Davidson; grandchildren, Amy Scheller, Anne Jones, Julie Davidson, Kristen Davidson, and Anne Butera; seven great grandchildren; and sisters, Gladys Morton and Ina Grill Kleckner. She was preceded in death by: her mother, Hermione Hadenfeld Young; a brother and two sisters; her husband, Harry Helmsing, Jr.; son, Steven Helmsing; a grandson; son-in-law; and step-granddaughter.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, on March 26, 1924, Geneva celebrated life in music, nature, and faith. While her sorrows were many, so were her joys: cooking, sewing, and gardening with grandchildren, a chance opportunity to sing with Lawrence Welk and his band, volunteering with Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries, learning to paint at 90, making new friends at Overland Park Place (and winning many rounds of “Name That Tune”) gave her great pleasure. Her zest for learning, her delight in nature, her openness to new experiences is her legacy.
Visitation will be from 12 Noon until 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 16 at Overland Park Funeral Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS. The Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Chapel. A reception will be held at Overland Park Place, 6555 W. 75th Street, Overland Park following services.
