Gary Dean Shields, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 at the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel with a visitation prior from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Gary was born July 10, 1937 in Fittstown, Oklahoma, He grew up in and around central and western Kansas, graduating high school in Great Bend, Kansas. He attended Kansas University and Kansas State University, graduating in 1960. He married Julee Newcomer, his wife of 48 years in June of 1961. Gary’s early years were in sales. He owned Central Fire & Police Supply in the 1970’s and was a real estate investor. He was an author and public speaker whose works included books and training on landlord/tenant relations, and protection of personal assets with trusts. Gary retired in the late 1990’s. Gary always had the travel bug and in 2005 he bought an Airstream trailer and has enjoyed many trips with the “Airstreamers” as well as personal trips with Julee through the southwest, parts of the east and north central USA. Gary's passionate hobby was genealogy and he and Julee spent time in many cemeteries on their personal travels looking for ancestors.
Gary was a past member of Ararat Shrine, and Kansas City Investment Club. Gary was currently active in the Kansas City Airstream Club and Old Mission Methodist Church in the Pathfinders class.
Gary is preceded in death by his brother Leon Shields and his parents, Florence and K.D. Shields.
Gary is survived by his wife, Julee Shields; two sons, Gregg (Tricia) and Scott (Terri); four grandchildren; Lindsay, Sunny, George, Grace; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Linda Newcomer; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Babs & Brian Finkle; sister-in-law, Jessie Shields. We will all miss his wit and sense of humor.
The family wishes to thank all of the medical staff in the Genitourinary Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Kansas City Cancer Center, KU Cancer Center, St. Luke’s Palliative Care and St. Luke’s Hospice, who treated Gary with great care and kindness during his illness.
