Frederick A. Plapp, 82, passed away the morning of November 19, 2007. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. Fred was born on March 29, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri, the elder son of Fritz and Rose Plapp. After graduating from Westport High School, he joined the Navy and went to war. On his way to the Pacific in 1944, he married Betty Plummer, a Kansas City girl he had met and fallen in love with at St. Peter?s United Church of Christ. Their long and loving marriage ended with Betty?s death 61 years later. During the war, as a gunner?s mate on the U.S.S. Rudyerd Bay, Fred fought at the battles of Peleliu, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, he returned to Kansas City and took over his father?s business, Superior Meat and Sausage Company, now known as Fritz?s, which he operated for many years in partnership with his brother, Elmer. Fred was a devoted family man, a hard working and successful business man, a talented handy man, and the life of every party. He built a house at Lake Perry from the ground up with his own hands. He played with his grandchildren with energy and enthusiasm long after their parents were exhausted. And no party was complete without Fred?s ?ein prosit.? Fred is survived by his son Fred, his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Dennis Cross, his grandchildren Christopher and Lauren Plapp and William and John Cross, and his beloved dog Rocky.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 23rd at St. Peter?s United Church of Christ, 700 E. 110th (110th Street and Holmes Road), Kansas City, MO 64131. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Fred?s name to St. Peter?s United Church of Christ.
