FRED J. LOGAN, SR.
Fred J. Logan, Sr., 84, died after a long illness on Saturday, May 15, at Brighton Gardens in Prairie Village. Family members will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, at Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th Street. A memorial service will follow immediately at 2 p.m.
Fred was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 2, 1926, to Herbert Charles Logan and Loretta Kremer Logan. The family moved to Independence, Missouri shortly after his birth. Fred was proud of his Independence roots.
Fred attended William Chrisman High School, served as student body president, and graduated in 1944. Upon his graduation, Fred entered the United States Navy. He served in Atlantic operations as a radio operator on the destroyer escort U.S.S. Robert I. Paine. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, Fred attended the University of Missouri. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in business administration.
Fred met Marjorie Hurst while attending M.U. They married in 1951 and had three children, Fred, Jr., Scott, and Terry. Fred and Marjorie were devoted parents. They thoroughly enjoyed the activities of their children and, in later years, of their grandchildren.
In 1950, Fred went to work as a sales representative for Procter & Gamble. He subsequently won promotions to unit sales manager and district sales manager. He was a businessman of the old school, remaining fiercely loyal to P & G throughout his life. He retired from the company in 1991, at age 65.
Fred was predeceased by his mother and father, his brother, Herb, and his sister, Thelma Coen. He is survived by his son, Fred, Jr., and his wife, Carol; his son Scott, and his wife, Pam; his daughter, Terry, and her husband, Michael; and seven grandchildren who called him Pop: Andy, Jack, and Sam Logan; Chris and Jenny Logan; and Logan and Jeffrey Rutherford.
The family is grateful to the caregivers at Brighton Gardens and the hospice workers from Odyssey Health Care for providing superb care for Fred in the closing months of his life. Family members request no flowers. Fred would have been delighted if friends instead made donations in his honor to the charity of their choice.
