Frank "Butch" McGinley

January 6, 1938 — February 10, 2018

Frank (Butch) Eugene McGinley of Mission, KS passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, February 10th. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years Barbara, and their two children, Michael (Kristy) McGinley, and Mindy (Kim) Brooks. His pride and joy were his five granddaughters, Kelsie, Katelyn, and Kylee Brooks; and Shannon and Erin McGinley, and his great-grandson Kaden. Butch also leaves behind a sister, Shirley (John) Blackman, two nieces, Cindy (Charlie) Hester, and Terry (Tom) Snodgrass and many grand nieces and nephews. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, and his nephew, Joel Blackman.

Butch was born January 6, 1938 to Frank and Arlene McGinley in Kansas City, Kansas. Butch attended Roseland Elementary School, and Shawnee Mission North High School where he was a standout halfback in football and met his future bride, Barbara Jean Braun. Butch spent two years as a Kappa Sig at Baker University. He retired from Allstate Insurance in 1999 but continued doing various part time jobs as he liked to stay busy. He coached both Mindy and Michael in softball and baseball throughout their childhood and he touched the lives of many of their teammates as well. He then went on to do the same with his granddaughters and their teammates. They affectionately called him Boppy. He was honored by KMBC Channel 9 with a special “Coach of the Week” designation, for the time he put into coaching youth sports. His interview with Karen Kornacki was featured on the evening news.  Many friends and neighbors were thankful for his handyman skills and he was always willing and able to help. His family knew that Boppy would almost always have a solution and the right tool to solve their problems.  He also enjoyed teaching and playing cards with his various poker groups; eating Fluffy Fresh donuts weekly; and enjoying as many brownies, cookies, and sweets as he could. If he wasn’t spending time attending his grandchildren’s sporting events (which he rarely missed), he loved the outdoors; which included hunting, fishing and playing golf with his son Michael and his friends. He had a huge place in his heart for his beloved animals. He left behind three dogs and two cats.

Butch loved vacationing at his mother’s house at the Lake of the Ozarks with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed water skiing, fishing, and drinking a nice cold one on the dock. There was nothing Butch loved more than spending time relaxing at the lake with his family. Again, enjoying teaching his kids and their friends and his grandkids how to ski and fish. He will be remembered for his patience while coaching young kids, and his compassion for others, and his incredible sense of humor. He touched the lives of a generation of both players and their parents while coaching youth sports.  Even when his health was failing, he was able to make the room break out into laughter.
