Frank Harrison Fisher, age 90, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on January 9, 2007 at Menorah Hospital. Visitation will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 13, 2007 with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 A.M. at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth Kansas, where he will be entombed in the shared grave with his previously-departed wife, Polly, who passed away June 29, 1995. Military services will be conducted at Leavenworth National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 16, at 10:00 A.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208.
Fisher was born May 6, 1916 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. He enlisted as a Private in the Missouri National Guard in 1937. Fisher became a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942 and advanced to Major with battlefield promotions during World War II. During the Normandy Invasion, Fisher, then a Captain commanding a beach assault company, landed on Utah Beach at H minus 15 (15 minutes before primary invasion began). Frank received the Purple Heart, 5-Bronze Battle Stars, Beach Assault Arrowhead, and the French Croix de Guerre for his valor during World War II. His Battalion received the Presidential Citation and the French Croix de Guerre. He became a member of the Army Active Reserves after his return to the United States and was recalled to duty during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Fisher was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1958 and retired in 1966.
Following World War II, he was employed through the Veteran Education Program by the architecture and engineering firm of Marshall & Brown. Through self-study and with the help of firm principals, Jim Marshall and Dwight Brown, Fisher satisfied the requirements and was licensed to practice architecture in Missouri and Kansas. He remained with the firm for 25 years and retired as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Sutterfield Fisher just prior to their 53rd wedding anniversary. Frank and Polly were married in the Baptist Church in Colorado Springs in 1942 while Frank was stationed at Camp Carson. He is survived by a daughter Mary Ann Edgar and her husband John M. Edgar; grandson John Fisher Edgar, wife Kelly, great-granddaughters Isabella Edgar and Emma Edgar; and grandson David Walter Edgar, wife Andrea, great-granddaughter Shannon Edgar and great-grandson David Edgar, Jr., all of Leawood.
