Ethleen Whitlow

May 8, 1923 — July 27, 2009

Ethleen D. Whitlow, 86, passed away July 27 at Menorah Medical Center. She was born to John and Florence Dillard in Biloxi, MS, where she was raised and graduated from high school. While serving as a secretary at Keesler Army Air Field in Biloxi during World War II, she met Dillard Whitlow. The name they held in common led to a first date and, later, a marriage that lasted 65 happy years.
Ethleen was a 50-year member of Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS. During those years, she served the church as an elder, President of the Presbyterian Women of Village Church, and Sunday school secretary. She was extensively involved in Easter Star and was secretary of the Meera Chapter for 10 years. While raising two daughters, she was active in the Parent-Teacher Association and helped host classroom parties and special school events. She also was a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader.
An unusually thoughtful person, Ethleen spent a good portion of her free time sending greeting cards to friends, family, and acquaintances who were celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays; convalescing; mourning; or needing a kind word. No person or event seemed to be overlooked, and through the years, she sent hundreds of cards.
Ethleen was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine Meadows, and her daughter, Nancy Whitlow. She is survived by her husband and her daughter, Karen Whitlow, both of Shawnee Mission, KS; and sister, Florence Bennett, of Winnsboro, LA. A memorial service is planned for 11 AM, July 31, at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Village Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity.
Arrangements by: D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel (913) 648-6224. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.dwnewcomers.com
