Elmer W. Rump, Jr., 79, of Mission, Kansas passed away August 25, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, August 28, 2009 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Hospice, 10100 W. 87th Street, Suite 100, Overland Park, KS 66212.
Elmer was born in McPherson County, Kansas, November 24, 1929. He graduated from Inman High School as valedictorian. Elmer enjoyed spending time in his wood working shop. There was nothing he couldn’t make or fix and loved doing projects for family, friends, and neighbors. He spent his career in the lumber business, beginning as an accountant with the J.W. Metz Lumber Co. in Wichita. While in Wichita, Elmer was active in the First Baptist Church, Downtown Lions Club, YMCA, and Boy Scouts of America. Elmer and family moved to Overland Park in 1971. He continued working in the lumber business, until retiring in 1992 as President and owner of Affiliated Building Centers. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Elmer was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria of 58 years; his son Michael and wife Brenda of Overland Park; daughter Jean of Overland Park; and grandchildren, Evan, Katie, Jenny, and Donnie. He is also survived by his sister, Bernice Regier and many nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Hazel Rump and his brother, Max.
