Elizabeth Grant Sutton (Betsey), 91, passed away Wednesday, September 15 at her home. She died peacefully, with her two sons by her side.

She was born June 18, 1919 to Frank and Adan Grant in Kansas City, MO. She graduated from The Barstow School in 1938 and attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. She married Walter S. Sutton in 1941. They lived in Kansas City until 1972 when they moved to San Marino, CA and later Santa Barbara CA. Following Walter’s death, Betsey moved back to Kansas City in 1988 to be near family.

Throughout her life, she volunteered for many groups, including libraries, the Johnson County Election Commission, and St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where she was the second woman elected to the Vestry and was active in Trinity Guild and the Altar Guild. She was a generous supporter of the University of Kansas through both the Business School and the School of Medicine. She enjoyed playing bridge with two bridge groups, knitting, reading, golf and time with her family and grandchildren. She remained close to her many friends throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Eleanor, and her husband. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Meg and Eric Valentine of La Grande, OR; Steve and Tami Sutton of Mission Hills, KS; Tod and Sidney Sutton of Lawrence, KS; and Julie and Bob Galvin of Meriden, NH; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many other family members.

A celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2010, followed by a reception at the church. The family suggests contributions to the KU Endowment Association (PO Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044-0928) or the charity of your choice.
