Mrs. E. Calkins

E. Virginia Calkins, age 91, passed away, Sunday, March 1, 2009 at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
Funeral Service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009 at DW Newcomer Son’s Overland Park Chapel 8201 Metcalf Ave Overland Park, KS 66204.. Burial to follow at Forest Hill Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to UMKC School of Medicine.
Virginia was a proud graduate of Wellesley College receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. She later continued her education receiving her Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling and Guidance from UMKC. Virginia spent many happy years as a History Teacher at Sunset Hill School. She later worked with the Kansas Regional Medical Program thru KU Medical Center. Virginia was also very proud of her association with the birth of the UMKC School of Medicine, serving as Dean of Students before retirement. She was an avid sports fan and a worldwide traveler. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leroy A. Calkins, M.D., son David R. Calkins, M.D. and brother Edgar R. Kyger, Jr.
Virginia is survived by daughter, Kathy Horne and husband Tom of Tulsa, OK; son, John Calkins M.D. and wife Mary of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Emily, Damon, Abby, Bret, Ali, Luke and Chris.
