Dwight Horner

Mr. Horner, 85, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2008 after an extended battle with Alzheimer?s disease. He was born December 3, 1922 to Oliver Howard Horner and Edna Cooke Horner in Kansas City, KS. He was a 1940 graduate of Wyandotte High School. He attended the University of Kansas for one year before enlisting in the United States Navy as a fighter pilot. He served as a member of Fighter Squadrons 3 and 5 on the aircraft carrier Yorktown in the far west Pacific. He was proud to be a pilot of the Grumman F6F Hellcat. Mr. Horner left the Navy having earned the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and was awarded five Air Medals. After leaving the Navy in 1945, he returned to the University of Kansas where he received his degree in Architecture. While at KU he was a member of the phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and a member and past president of Theta Nu Epsilon.
His professional experience involved time with Neville, Sharp & Simon Architects of Kansas City, MO, a partnership with his brother John R. Horner, Horner & Horner Architects of Kansas City, KS and finally a long partnership with Roger Blessing in Horner & Blessing Architects of Kansas City, MO. He was lead architect in Convention Center Associates that designed the first two phases of the new Bartle Hall.
Mr. Horner enjoyed 35 years of living at Lake Quivira where he was active in sailing and golf. He was also a member and past president of the Kansas City Club and the Wise Owl Club. His professional memberships include President of the Missouri Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Missouri Association of Registered Architects, Scarab Architectural Fraternity, Director of the Missouri Council of Architects, and Director of the Construction Specification Institute of Kansas City.
Mr. Horner was preceded in death by his siblings John R. Horner, Martha A. Winters and Patricia H. Chatt. He leaves his wife of nearly fifty-eight years, Josephine Pace Horner; his daughters Gail Gage and husband Hires Gage, Lisa Franciskato and husband David Franciskato; four grandchildren, Andrea Ziegenfuss, Jason Ziegenfuss, Bailey Gage, and Logan Gage. He also leaves a step-grandson Paul Franciskato, brother William W. Horner, sister-in-law Adrienne R. Horner and sister B. Eileen Bell.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Brighton Gardens, The Sweet Life of Shawnee as well as Good Shepherd Hospice for all of their care and concern for Mr. Horner and his family.
