Dorothy Opal Coffman Smith, 94, of Prairie Village, KS joined her husband of 67 wonderful years, Elgin E. Smith in God?s Garden on October 7, 2008. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 13th at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Burial immediately following the service at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 105th and Holmes, Kansas City, MO. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1-2:00 P.M. Monday at the chapel prior to the service. The family requests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, Greater Kansas City Division, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, KS 66212 or the charity of the donor?s choice.
Dorothy was born in Warrensburg, MO on August 11, 1914. She met Elgin in Sedalia, MO and married in 1935. Together with their family, they moved to Prairie Village, KS in 1943. After working in several fields of photography, they opened Elgin Smith?s Studio 35, Inc. which specializes in color slide production and copies of fine art. Dorothy was a Life member and Secretary for 35 years for the Professional Photographers Association of Greater Kansas City, a Life member of the Kansas Professional Photographers of America, a member of Trial Chapter, American Business Women?s Association for 47 years, a member of Overland Park/Gardeners of America, Friends of Powell Gardens, a 50 year member of Sedalia Chapter 57 Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Broadway United Methodist Church. She is survived by three children, John ?Jack? E. Smith and his wife Debbie, of Waukegan, IL, Sue Bastian, of Bronxville, NY and Judy A. Schuck of Prairie Village, KS; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Dorothy was a gracious, kind-hearted and admirable Woman, Mother and ?Granny?. She will be missed and in our hearts forever.
