Dr. Donald J. Smith, M.D., 89, Overland Park, KS, passed away January 15, 2008. An anatomical donation was given to the Kansas University Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, February 23, 2008, at The Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Turner Family Health Clinic, 677 S. 55th, Kansas City, KS 66106 or to the Health Partnership Clinic, 8600 West 95th , Suite 100, Overland Park, KS 66212.

Dr. Smith was born February 25, 1918, in Hartford, CT, the son of Harford William and Clara Ann Gooch Smith. He attended Loomis-Chaffee School in Windsor, CT, received his undergraduate degree from Trinity College, Hartford, CT in 1940 and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1949. He was selected to take a course in Meteorology at MIT under the auspices of the Army Air Corps and subsequently was commissioned a 2nd Lt. He served at the Pentagon on subcommittees of the Combined General Staffs. He was awarded a Certificate of Merit and had obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel at the time of his discharge at the end of WWII.

Dr. Smith set up a Family General Practice of Medicine in Overland Park in 1950. He practiced in Johnson County for over 45 years and delivered over 2000 babies. He undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a hospital in Johnson County and was instrumental in the development of Shawnee Mission Medical Center, where he served as the first president of the medical staff. He provided charity medical care at the Turner Clinic and helped start the Health Partnership Clinic for the uninsured. Dr. Smith was a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice; a member of the Kansas Medical Society, the American Medical Association and past President of the Johnson County Medical Society; served as President of the K.U. Medical School Alumni Association; and was a Board Member of the K.U. Medical School Distinguished Teaching Fund Program. He was a long time member of the Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church choir; a 40 year member of the Overland Park Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was recognized as the Overland Park Citizen Of The Year in 1993. Dr. Smith and his family enjoyed many winter seasons in Vail, CO and he was instrumental in founding the Vail, CO Rotary Club. He loved to give advice and his favorite word was ?pursuit?.

Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Patricia Owens Smith. Survivors include his second wife, Mary Virginia Murphy Smith, Overland Park; three children, Patricia A. Senecal, Durango, CO, Don J. Smith, Centennial, CO, and Jean Barnhart, Overland Park; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
