In the morning of April 25, 2015, Don passed away peacefully in his sleep of natural causes.
Don was born in Des Moines, Iowa, July 26, 1921. He was the third child and the first son of Antoinette (Mixa) and James Shortell.
Don loved sports, especially football, baseball and golf. In high school he was an all-state end. He had a couple of football scholarships offers to play in college, notably Purdue, but chose to enlist in the Navy right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as a communication officer on the USS Cogswell until November 1947 when he received his Honorable Discharge.
He worked for Mobil Oil Corporation for 36 years and was very proud that he worked his way from the loading docks to become the Special Projects Coordinator of the Midwest.
Don had a great sense of humor and a very unique way putting you in place without being disrespectful. Truly his life was centered around his family. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Patricia; daughter, Marilyn Shortell; and son, Joseph Shortell. He is survived by: daughter, Cathy (Jerry) Jurgensen and her children, Erin (Jill) McManus and Maurine (Shawn) McManus; son, Dr. James (Zoe Herrington) Shortell and his son, Sean Shortell; son, Dr. Thomas (Susan) Shortell and their sons, Eric, Jack, Neil, and Max Shortell; son, Pat (Lori) Shortell and their sons, Brett and Ryan Shortell; daughter, Donna (Mike) Kerr and her son, Anthony Madrigal; and by 5 great grandchildren.
