Fred David Meier
Fred David Meier passed away peacefully Sunday, April 14, 2013 in hospice care, after a short illness, at the North Kansas City Hospital.
Born August 15, 1926 to Fredrick and Marfisa Meier, he attended schools in Madison, Illinois graduating from Madison High School in the spring of 1944. July 18, 1944, Fred enlisted in the United States Coast Guard serving with the United States Marine Corps aboard the LST 885. Serving in the Pacific Theatre Amphibious Forces, he participated in the Okinawa invasion liberation in August, 1945. Fred was honorably discharged May 2, 1945.
Fred was united in marriage on May 21, 1948 to Norma Jean Tapp.
Married 58 years, Jean preceded Fred in death on February 2, 2006.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Meier, Jr., Independence, Kansas; Garry Meier and wife Nora, Houston, Texas; one daughter, Candi Jones, Overland Park, Kansas: four grandchildren, Aaron Jones, KCMO, Justin Meier, St. Louis, MO, Derek Meier, Oklahoma City, OK, Kelsie Meier, Wichita, Kansas, a sister, Irene Smith of Camp Verde, AZ, and a half-brother, James Tharp of Madison, IL. He is preceded in death by his father, mother, stepdad, and a grandson, Randy.
A resident of Johnson County since 1954, Fred's professional career encompassed time as a supervisor for the American Investment Company along with a banking career including 3 presidencies from 1967 until retiring in 1994. He also enjoyed many civic activities including serving as Chair of the Our Lady of Mercy Board of Directors for many years. He is a dear friend to the Sisters at Our Lady of Mercy.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 17th, 6-8 PM, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park. Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
