1935-2011—Diane Smith Schumacher (Diane), 75, died June 26 at Sunrise of Leawood after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan. Diane was born July 20, 1935, to Retta and Robert Smith of Pittsburgh, Penn. She lived in Poland, Ohio from 1960 to 1983 before moving to the Kansas City area. She graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, attended Miami University and graduated from Penn State University in 1957, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She married William M. Schumacher in 1957 after meeting him on a blind date at Penn State. Diane and Bill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together in 2007 with a large family gathering.

Diane is best characterized by her love of family and her strong faith in God. She was known for her bright smile and cheerful disposition. She was generous, energetic and fun-loving. She loved to play the organ & piano, hike, ski and play tennis, but her true passion was gardening. She also loved going out for coffee with friends, participating in her book club, playing bridge and going on daily walks.

Family was the center of attention in Diane’s life. She was beloved by her 7 grandchildren and was known as “Grammy.” She loved to shop with her girls and take the grandkids sailing and swimming. Diane and her husband Bill spent time traveling to see their grandchildren. They especially loved vacations where they got the whole family together at the beach or mountains.

Diane was an active volunteer throughout her lifetime. She served as the chairman of United Way and was president of The Junior League in Youngstown, Ohio. She was a leader with the PTA and always involved in her children’s schools. She served on the board of directors for the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and was active at Poland Presbyterian Church in Poland, Ohio for over 20 years.

After moving to Kansas City, Diane found another church home at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. Diane loved the church and was actively involved in various committees, Bible Studies and served as a Stephen Minister.

In addition to her commitment to volunteering, she had a career in real estate in both Ohio and Kansas City, including Eugene Brown.

Later in life, Diane was active in the local Alzheimer’s Association, participating in group events and expressing herself through watercolor painting.

Diane is preceded in death by her husband, William M. Schumacher, and her father and mother, Retta and Bob Smith. She is survived by her brother, Robert L. Smith III, of Tyler Texas, and her three children: Mark Schumacher and his wife Lorie, of Park City, Utah; Karen Cook and her husband, Andy, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and daughter, Jennifer Stradinger and her husband Mike, of Mission Hills, Kan.; and her seven grandchildren, Allison, Hanna Jane, Quinn, Samantha, Chloe, Will and Baker.

The family is extremely grateful for the outstanding quality of care by the loving and dedicated staff at Sunrise of Leawood as well as Continua Hospice. In addition, the family would like to thank the Heart of America chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for their support over the last several years.
