Deloris Hatcher

September 4, 1919 — January 16, 2007

Deloris LaVaughn Hatcher passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at the Pinnacle Nursing Home in Olathe, Kansas, after a long illness. She was the only daughter of Earl Edward Hamby and Anna Mae Willis Hamby. They also had three sons, Clarence, Claude, and Earnest, all of whom preceded LaVaughn in death. LaVaughn grew up in those hard years of 1920?s and the 1930?s, after her parents separated, she and her brothers had to work and help their mother with the boarding house she ran in Dodge City. They took their little wagon and sold Mom?s baked goods around the neighborhood and helped with the cooking and cleaning that a boarding house required.

When she was just sixteen, she married her high school sweetheart, F.D. Hatcher of Minneola, Kansas in October of 1935. They were living in Dodge City when their twins were born on February 14, 1938. The little girl, Claudine, only lived four days and is buried in Dodge City. The little boy Claude, grew into a fine young man but tragedy seemed to follow them, when he was killed in an accident in their home in December of 1952.

F.D. and LaVaughn moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1939 and he took a job working for the R.L. Sweet Lumber Company. They were still living there in 1942 when their second son, Robert Lee was born in October. The following year F.D. was drafted, and joined the Navy. While he was in the service, LaVaughn and the boys spent their time living with F.D.?s parents in Minneola and LaVaughn?s Mother in Albuquerque. After the war, they returned to Kansas City and bought their first house at 75th and Locust Street.

LaVaughn was always an active member of the Broadway United Methodist Church and was involved with Women?s Circle at the Church and in their volunteer work. In later years, she and F.D. enjoyed the companionship of the Keen agers, a group of Seniors who made many trips and cruises together. They loved all of the trips they went on and had so much fun with these happy people.

In the fall of 1964 they moved to a new neighborhood at 95th and Dearborn where they made many new friends and stayed there until F.D. became ill, and they moved into Claridge Court and stayed there until a little before F.D.?s death in May of 2001.

After F.D.?s death LaVaughn moved into Grand Court and had an apartment there until just before she passed away.

LaVaughn?s favorite hobby was flower gardening and she was very good at it. She seemed to have a great ability to make plants grow and bloom. She had an abundance of roses, some of the prettiest around. In the summer there was always a fresh bouquet in the house. She gave many fresh bouquets to friends and to those who were ill.

LaVaughn was a great lady who made friends easily and could always put a stranger at ease. Her home was a warm and friendly place. She always had a snack or a cup of coffee ready for anyone, but her favorite occupations, were that of Mother, Grandmother, and Wife. When Bob?s children, Susan, Darrin, Carrie, and John came along, she became the best Grandmother any kids ever had. There were movies to see, game to play, and shopping trips to make. She was always happy to baby-sit and eagerly kept the grandkids entertained with baking cookies and playing games.

LaVaughn leaves behind her son Robert and his wife Fern, four grandchildren Susan Staggenborg of Manhattan, Kansas, Darrin Hatcher of Olathe, Kansas, Carrie Shepherd of Overland Park, Kansas, and John Hatcher of Springhill, Kansas. She also had nine great grand children, Connor, Logan, and Shelby Hatcher, Dylan, Dalton, and Preston Hatcher, Brett Shepherd, and Sarah and Lance Staggenborg.
Funeral service will be Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 P.M. at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00, prior to the service. Burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice, 800 E. 101 Terr., Suite 150, KC, MO 64131.
