David L. Smart, Jr., was born on March 9, 1924, in Kansas City, MO, and died on May 21, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Frances Smart. He attended Southwest High School and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1948 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During World War II, David served as a bombardier in the 8th Army Air Corps. Returning from a bombing raid over Germany, he and his crew were forced to bail out over Holland where they were captured and became prisoners of war. Returning from the war, he worked for Sheffield Steel Corporation and later at American Steel Works, from which he retired. He was a member of the Vanguard since 1955, and Mission Hills Country Club since 1952. He is survived by his sisters, Sarah Stock (husband, Gregg) of Taos, NM, and Nancy Moore (Claude) of Phoenix, AZ; his daughter, Elizabeth Smart- Hinton (Curtis); his wife, Lucia and her daughter, Jane Kelly (Pat), son John Yanofsky, and 6 grandchildren. David's memorial service will be at Newcomer's Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, at 3 p.m., on Tuesday, May 25.
