Absolute peace gently descended upon David R. Gilman, March 6, 2007, at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born March 8, 1930, in Atchison, Kansas, the middle of five children. His parents were Joseph R. and Opal (Thomas) Gilman. David graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1948. He served two tours in the U.S. Navy, including service aboard the USS Boxer. He attended Kansas City, Kansas, Junior College and Washburn University, where he earned a law degree. David began his practice of law in Overland Park in 1958. Over a span of forty-eight years, he represented thousands of clients. He was an ardent defender of the rights guaranteed to all under the United States Constitution. During his lifetime, David was a member of the Johnson County and Kansas Bar Associations, the Kansas Trial Lawyer's Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Legion. David's hobbies included horse racing, fishing and golf. He especially enjoyed summers entertaining friends and family by his swimming pool. He was a talented singer and musician and a wonderful story teller. David married Jeanne Gore in 1963 and together they raised two sons, Duke Frye and Frank Gilman. He was preceded in death by his parents. His wife, Jeanne, passed away October 17, 2006. He leaves his son Duke and his wife, Barb, along with their beautiful daughters, Suzanne, Kelly and Ginny Frye. He leaves his son and law partner, Frank and his wife Mary Sue, along with their beautiful children, Sam, Claire and Jack Gilman. Also surviving are David's sisters, Mary Ruth Gilman and Martha Brown and his brothers Dick (Mary) Gilman and Mark (Nancy) Gilman along with many nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law Jan and husband Don Mawle also survive. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at D.W. Newcomers Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf. A memorial prayer will be offered that day at 5:30 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date. Rest in peace David R. "Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine."
