On April 3, 2007, Clyde Edwin Vernon, 88, was reunited in heaven with the love of his life, his wife Charlotte, who preceded in death by three years.

Clyde was born in Goff, Kansas on March 10, 1919 to John Vernon and Frances Merle McKellips and spent most of his early years in Goff.

He served in the United States Army during WWII.

Clyde married his sweetheart Charlotte Leslie and lived in Kansas City for several years before moving to Independence in 1961 with his wife and son, Jerry.

He was a service station owner in the eastern Jackson county area for 35 years, at one time owning three stations near 40 Highway and Blue Ridge. Clyde?s friendly personality as well as his honesty and integrity made his a successful business owner. Customers, concerned about disreputable auto repairmen, would readily bring their cars to a Clyde Vernon station because of his sterling reputation.

Clyde had an engaging smile. His overall mood was pleasant and upbeat throughout his life. He was a pleasure to be around.

Clyde and his wife were involved in their Independence Neighborhood Council in the 47th and Blue Ridge area for many years.

Every winter for over twenty-five years they vacationed near Corpus Christi, Texas, where Clyde enjoyed catching flounder and ocean trout. He also loved to fish at the Lake of the Ozarks and spending time there with family and friends in the summer months.

Clyde was a member of Blue Ridge Christian Church and took pride in keeping the bushes there well trimmed in his retirement. He was also one of the Blue Ridge Mall walkers for a number of years.

In the last few years Clyde enjoyed eating lunch daily at the Palmer Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte. He leaves one son Jerry and his wife Laura. He also leaves a sister Nila Fund, two granddaughters Christine Say and Leslie Glasco and their husbands Matt and Jeff. He leaves one great-granddaughter Charlotte Leslie Say whose birthday he celebrated in good health on Saturday.
