Clifford James Knox

Died March 22, 2013 at Village Shalom

Born Sept. 1, 1924 in Springfield, Mass. to Lester Wade Knox and Elizabeth Bolter Knox, Cliff enlisted in the Navy in 1942 where he served as a radioman gunner in the VT-81 Airgroup aboard the USS Wasp. Cliff was awarded two Air Medals and a WWII Victory Medal; and was honorably discharged in November 1945. Taking advantage of the GI Bill of Rights, Cliff attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where he met, and immediately fell in love with, Carolyn Randolph. Cliff earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950 and married Carolyn in 1951. Employed by General Electric, Cliff and Carolyn then became what he liked to call "corporate gypsies"; moving to New York, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Texas and finally Kansas as he worked his way up in the company. Cliff and Carolyn bore one son and three daughters during these "gypsy" years: Randy, Lauri, Lee and Lyn. Cliff retired from GE in 1986 while living at Lake Quivira where he and Carolyn spent over 30 years.

In addition to being a loving husband, devoted father and dedicated worker, Cliff enjoyed many activities over the years such as sailing, horseback riding, golf, and traveling. In his later years, Cliff was very active in the Overland Park Barbershop Chorus where he served as president and in other leadership roles, and enjoyed singing "the old songs."

Cliff is survived by his wife, their four children and his two grandsons, Brett and Wade, and has helped with the raising and educating of many other children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Hazel, and his daughter in law, Sharon.

The family will hold a private interment ceremony at Mount Moriah Cemetery. A public Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at 2:30 pm at the chapel located at 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210.
