Memorial services for Chester M. Whitebread, Jr. “Chet” will be 3pm on Tuesday, September 19th at Overland Park Funeral Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will begin at 2pm before the services.
Chet passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
Chet was born June 12, 1938 in Topeka, KS to Chester M. Whitebread, Sr. and Freda Wray Whitebread.
Chet is survived by his wife, Joyce Whitebread. Chet and Joyce married on October 9, 1976. Other survivors include his brother, Milton Whitebread; sons, Richard “Rick” Adams, Darrell (Christine) Whitebread, Shawn (Christina) Whitebread, Chad (Megan) Whitebread, and Scott Whitebread; and daughters, Cheri (Jeff) Torneden and Julienne “Jules” Goolsby. Chet was a father figure to grandson, Christopher Adams. And since they didn’t have enough children, Chet and Joyce claimed adopted son and daughter, Eric Stohry and Melynda Steward. Chet and Joyce have 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. As well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Maynard, Walter, Orville, and Ted; and sisters, Yvonne Warbutron, Verda “Marilyn” Smith, Benita Swatzell, Carol “Sue” Hodges, Beverly Kurth; and son, Mark Adams.
Chet learned locksmithing in his early years working for Mr. Wilson at Wilsons Supply & Service in Lawrence, KS. He started Chet’s Lock & Key in 1984. He sold his business and retired in 2000.
Chet’s hobbies included coyote calling, prairie dog hunting and bench rest shooting at Mill Creek Rifle Club where he was a current member. Through his hobbies he gained many very special friends who were more like family and way too many to name individually. He won many trophies and prestigious awards for his marksmanship in bench rest shooting in national and local competitions.
