Dr. Charles E. Stevenson, 90, of Lakeview Village, Lenexa, KS died peacefully at the Kansas City Hospice House on April 21, 2009. Charles was born on January 19, 1919, the son of Nancy and Dr. O.E. Stevenson of Labette City, KS. He graduated from high school in Oswego, KS in 1937 and attended Bethel College in Newton, KS where he graduated in 1941. He then completed medical school at the University of Kansas in 1944, and traveled to Memphis, TN to serve a general internship at St. Joseph Hospital.
He married Charlotte Stafford of Neodesha, KS on June 4, 1944 before going on active duty in World War II as a medical officer in the Navy. Charles was attached to the Third Marine Division in the Pacific theater until 1946. After his discharge, he began a general practice of medicine in Neodesha, KS for the next 18 years.
He completed a residency in anesthesiology at KU Medical Center in 1965 and remained on the faculty there until 1980. The last few years of his career were spent at Lee’s Summit Hospital. He retired in 1985.
His primary interests were his family and the practice of medicine. However, gardening and traveling with his wife and family gave him great pleasure. He was a member of the Kansas Medical Society, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Medical Society, an elder in the Village Presbyterian Church, and a member of the KC Men’s Garden Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Charlotte; four children; Mary Anne Demeritt (Bob) of Leawood, KS; Carol Stevenson (Ron) of San Francisco, CA; Jean Stevenson (Lou) of Denver, CO; Scott Stevenson (Sarah) of Providence, RI; seven grandchildren: Amy, Colin, Anna, Wesley, Claire, Sophia and Brett; two great grandchildren; Graham and Quinn.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Village Presbyterian Church 6641 Mission Rd, Shawnee Mission, KS 66208. There will be a private burial in Neodesha, KS at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be sent to the Village Presbyterian Church or the Kansas City Hospice House.
