Charles Grant Nichols, 97, died Thursday, March 17, 2011. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 25th at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church; inurnment in Leavenworth Nat’l Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Ave, Mission, KS 66202.
Charles was born July 17, 1913 the son of Anna Laura and Charles O. Nichols in Kansas City, MO. He was baptized in 1914 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, KCMO. He graduated from Manual High School in KCMO and attended KU. He was united in marriage to Helene Felice (“Felicia”) Kleinmann in 1935. Charles served his country from 1942-1947 in the 82nd Airborne as a glider pilot. In preparation for D-Day, he spent months in England learning to fly every type of glider. He piloted a glider in the first wave of the D-Day invasion at St. Mere Eglise, France. Due to his injuries, he was sent to O’Reilly General Hospital. Charles was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church since 1951 where he taught Sunday School and ushered. He was preceded in death his wife, Helene Felice Nichols. Survivors include his three daughters: Barbara Marie Nichols Rubin, Diane Nichols Valentine, and Joy Nichols Bohlin; his grandchildren: Elizabeth Cheryl Bryla, Jeffrey Elliott Rubin, Carolyn Louise Shopovick, Ann Elizabeth Casertano, Mark Frederick Valentine, Timothy Charles Valentine, Holly Elizabeth Kabler, and Laura Dawn Heckathorn; great grandchildren: Alexander and Ethan Shopovick, Jacob Bryla, Nicholas, Hannah and Christian Casertano, Leila, William and Charlotte Valentine, Dawson, Morgan and Parker Kabler.
Charles dedicated his life to God, country, and home. He was a master carpenter and woodworker. He also enjoyed gardening.
